José Tomás Conde Ruano holds a BA and a PhD in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Granada. Since 2011, he has been working as a lecturer and researcher at the University of the Basque Country (EHU), where he currently serves as the coordinator of the undergraduate degree in Translation and Interpreting.

His main research focus lies in the concepts of translation quality and assessment, which he approaches through empirical methodologies and within the framework of cognitive translatology. He collaborates with several research groups, including ECIS+, PETRA, PACTE, GENTT, and TRALIMA/ITZULIK. He is also interested in the professional practice of translators, which often serves as a source of inspiration for his teaching.
He mainly teaches practical translation modules between English and Spanish. He strives to foster student learning through the principles of social constructivism. Rather than simply providing information that is readily available, he aims at guiding and motivating students to take ownership of their professional development.
He is co-editor of Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice and a member of the editorial boards of MeTI: Methods in Translation and Interpreting and Trans: Revista de Traductología. Since 2024, he is the President of AIETI.
